Imaginative play via football Little Kickers, the pre-school football programme that started in the UK, is expanding to Ireland. Classes have been running in North Dublin since January 2007 and more are due to start in south Dublin in mid-September, with further classes being introduced nationwide over the next 12 months. Developed by Football Association-qualified coaches and nursery school teachers in the UK this soccer-based physical activity programme is geared towards kids form age two to five. It works on the basis that children are much more likely to learn if their imaginations are engaged and skills are introduced through games, rather than formal drills. The company’s motto ‘Play not Push’ reflects this. Concepts such as sharing, taking turns, teamwork and listening to instructions are incorporated into the activities. The classes also enable children to develop co-ordination, agility and balance, while colours and numbers are gently introduced through football.
